Military History Museums in the Mountain Region

Seven military history museums and collections in a region deeply affected by war and occupation during World War II. The collections are located along the E6, E16 and RV3 routes.

Dovre og Lesja Krigsminnesamling

Dovre og Lesja Krigsminnesamling has its exhibition and collection at Hinden military camp, built by the German occupation forces in 1941. The collection contains nearly 4,000 items, most relating to local events and everyday life during World War II.

Dovre og Lesja Krigsminnesamling

Gudbrandsdal Krigsminnesamling

The fiercest fighting in Southern Norway during World War II took place in Kvam, where German and British forces clashed in April 1940. Gudbrandsdal Krigsminnesamling is a unique memorial collection about these events – the war, occupation and defence of the Gudbrandsdal valley. The exhibition features rare and original equipment from soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Next to the museum you will find a Peace Park with a memorial stone in honour of those who fell in World War II.

Gudbrandsdal Krigsminnesamling

Sollia Krigshistorisk Museum

A large and richly stocked museum focusing on 1940 and the occupation years, with particular emphasis on SOE Company Linge and Milorg. The exhibition takes you back to the years 1940–1945, conveying powerful stories about the brutality, humiliation and human drama of the war through authentic objects that truly leave an impression. Guided tours available.

Modellkammer Jørstadmoen Sambandsmuseum

The exhibitions are housed in the now-listed line and land defence depot from 1893. Here you can learn about military communications and information and communications technology (ICT) at both tactical and strategic level in Norway. The museum also covers the history of Jørstadmoen military camp from the mid-1700s to the present day.

Bagn Bygdesamling og Bagnsbergatn

The war memorial collection at Bagn Bygdesamling tells the story of the extensive battles that took place in Bagn in April 1940. Bagnsbergatn (Bagnsbergene farm) is the only authentic battle site in Norway that has remained untouched since April 1940 – five houses with bullet holes and a powerful war memorial exhibition.

Krigsutstilling på Leikvin

A small but richly detailed exhibition spread across three rooms at the Leikvin open-air museum in Sunndalsøra. Local historian and author of the series Sunndal 1940–1945, Espen Flaa Bolstad, presents a selection of authentic artefacts, uniforms, photographs and local finds from the occupation of Sunndal. The exhibition offers an intimate and focused glimpse into everyday life during the war.

Nord-Østerdal Fly og Militærhistorisk Forening

Learn about local contemporary history from Østerdalen and the mountain region. The collection features over 1,000 registered items, including unique objects found nowhere else in the world that have received international recognition. Topics covered: local aviation and military history, World War II locally, the Police Troops in Sweden, the German Brigade, Gaza, the Cold War and international operations. Large book collection – members borrow books free of charge.
